Should Civil Society Stand For Elections?

Anna V/s Government . This is theme in most English channel considering current tussle going on between anna hazare and upa led government. Anna Hazare wants a very strong lok pal bill which can help in curbing corruption while government seems to of view of keeping prime minister , mps and low bureaucracy out of lok pal judridiction.

Government and Anna team also dont agree of appointment of lok pal and what should be criteria of the same. As anna is rallying around meeting various politicial parties , government has called all party meet on lok pal bill.

Government has tried its best to undermine anna movement and congress has used various means to question the very movement. Congress using Digvijay singh has called anna various names by calling him RSS man or questioning his credentials.

People from government are of view that Anna Hazare and his team are neither sole representative of civil society nor can be said to be true respresentative of people of India. Kapil sibal has accused anna of trying to have parallel government.

Anna hazare in his interview to Rajdeep sardesai made it clear that he wont ever contest elections. His views of Indian voters are full resigned. Anna believes that his deposit would get japat , if he stands for election. He believes that voters are not consious of voting power.

I personally hold a view that people like anna hazare, arvind kerjiwal , kiran bedi , abdul kalam , narayan murthy ,ila bhatt and many upright characters must actually participate in the political process by contesting elections.

I understand voters are still not mature enough and most of time caste , creed , religion and even money gets vote but at same time rising educated middle class would back right candidates , if they have opportunity to do so.

We are in one of most critical times of our history. The path we choose in 2014 would determine how we would fare in coming times. Right candidate is step one in dealing with majority of our problems and onus is on us to choose right people to become MPs but civil society must take first step in entering the contest.

The above are my views on this but I would like to hear from other people. So what do you think?. Should civil society stand for elections?
